Wright's opinion

One area in which Wright expresses his opinion through parentheses is when he is describing his job at the cafe. In this passage he depicts the cultural background of the black man to be a paradox because the negro makes up a large part of the nation, but is excluded from american culture. Wright explains here that the oppression that keeps an otherwise large and influential part of society from contributing was established through years of hate and developed habit. Wright indicates that this is an almost irreversible change. This change is not necessarily irreversible, but it cannot easily and peacefully be reversed in a short period of time. Such a radical action would appear to be a violation of white culture. Much like the blacks had accepted and conformed to their oppression, the whites have accepted and conformed to their domination. Such a change would require a will that few people possess. Even if all blacks were to think the same thing at the same time, few would be inclined to do anything, accepting and conforming to the culture had made them lazy.
