Wright is very unhappy about hearing about his mother's paralysis. Before his mother had a stroke, Wright says that he felt like he had some control over the world and how it worked, but when his mother had a stroke, it changed all that. The few truths that he had established in his mind about the world had been broken, and with nothing left that he felt like he had power over in the actual world, Wright felt compelled to create a different mental world because then he feels like he can have some control over the outcomes and his happiness. He had previously been interested in superstitions for a similar reason. Even though they have very little effect on the world as it runs, the fact that it seems like they do and that he can control them made it worthwhile for him to live in that reality. There is very little left, he realizes, in the current reality for him to stay and appreciate. Wright builds this new reality, and he wishes to remain there, for in this reality, the things closest to him will not suddenly disappear.
